THE GAZELLE
The Gazelle Original Hand Carved Sculpture by Matt Schiermeier
The Gazelle
This piece was inspired by one of my more recent sculptures, Rebirth. She was an abstract limestone piece that I mended back together with a piece of walnut. This process is called lamination and isn’t used all that often. Because it isn’t often seen and because I really enjoyed the process (a more unique and ornate final product) I decided to take this technique and apply it to something new from the beginning.
So I chose one of my childhood favorites, the gazelle. To me, I thought of this little animal as always so striking and sleek.
My idea was to section this piece off using different materials to make it whole,
The horns being such a strong and beautiful focal point, I wanted to make them truly, just that.
The horns started as separate blocks: black sandalwood marble, Indiana limestone, raspberry alabaster, and white Yule Colorado marble. I pinned and cemented these blocks together then carved the horns. The ears are carved from walnut.
To give a little more color, I took turquoise, crushed it up and inlayed it into 4 places. 2 rings on each horn.
